Reflections on the readings from the One Year Bible: Friday, January 11

Today’s story in Matthew is the disciples being in the boat with Jesus when a terrible storm caused them to fear that they would perish…..and Jesus was asleep. They woke Jesus up and He rebuked them for their fear and their lack of faith. One one level that seems unfair. Who wouldn’t be afraid of drowning in a terrible storm? That is a natural response. And how is it that they should have more faith? Is faith something that they can add to and increase until they get enough of it to calm the storms themselves without having to wake Jesus? I don’t think that is what is going on here. While their fears were a natural response to the danger they were facing they had a choice about what to do with that fear. The Scripture says that God has not given us a spirit of fear but of power and love and a sound mind. So they could have chosen to overcome their fear with trust. Trust not in a desired outcome but trust in the One who is in the boat. That is how they could have had more faith. These men would go on to face much worse storms, since all would eventually be martyred. Trust is what would get them through those storms as well. They learned the Master’s lessons well.
